Kingaroy Soldiers Memorial Rotunda

Kingaroy Soldiers Memorial Rotunda

Project Overview
South Burnett Regional Council reached out to QHR for the conservation and preservation of the landmark rotunda, ensuring its longevity and protection for future generations. The scope of work included removing the render wall to examine the base structure and conduct necessary repairs, as well as addressing corbel edge repairs and spalled areas on the ring beam while preserving the bronze lettering. Additionally, damaged floor structures were replaced, along with butt joint flooring, ceilings, and the installation of new floor and ceiling hatches. Comprehensive documentation of all investigative work was compiled and submitted to the council for their records.
History
The Kingaroy Memorial Park Rotunda and Stone of Remembrance War Memorial were constructed in 1931 and opened at a dedication ceremony in 1932. The memorial structures and surrounding site/setting are not included on the Queensland State Heritage Register but are of undoubted cultural significance to the local community.
Investigation and Repair
During the process of base wall deconstruction and render removal, significant structural issues were uncovered. It was revealed that sections of the structure were cast hollow, contributing to widespread deterioration. The affected areas ranged from the rotunda base with known areas other areas affected extended to various columns, plinths, and capitols, previously believed to be in good condition. Prior to re-concreting, all problematic zones were reinforced and stabilized. The new render was traditionally finished with Ashlar joints and coloured pointing to replicate the original. Upon the removal of the ceiling for inspection, repairs became necessary for the decayed sections of the ring beam rafter supports and the replacement of lead flashing at the roof and ring beam join. All structural interventions were adhered to using traditional methods and in line with the principles outlined in the Burra Charter.
Although the investigation highlighted critical structural concerns, the repair works undertaken in 2017 have secured the main structure’s longevity for years to come.
