QCWA Women’s Hostel
Objectives and philosophy of the project
Queensland Country Woman’s Association West Moreton Division engaged our company to save their condemned Heritage listed building as they were previously advised the cost to save the building would have been out of their reach financially. Both the client and we not only wanted to preserve the iconic building, QCWA wanted to continue it’s long legacy in contributing community support by providing accommodation for women suffering through personal crisis or natural disaster. To enable the restoration several trade services provided very competitive pricing to make this project a reality.

Description of works
This staged project was to regain structural integrity and restore the building bringing it back to livable condition. The first stage was full re-stumping, straightening and re-levelling of the 2-story building as well as front stairs replacement. Substantial deflection of main structure due to stump deterioration was overcome by re-stumping and raising the building back into alignment up to 200mm in some area.
The front verandah boards were replaced with Australian hardwood of the same size as original, collapsing joists and bearers where replaced and iron lacework has been preserved insitu and painted using 2pac enamels. The bathrooms and plumbing work where then renovated and terrazzo polished on the bathroom floors. The internal and external paintwork was completed using traditional heritage colours under advisement of a colour consultant. Q.H.R had worked on this project with the assistance of the department (DESI) advising on various components and providing the necessary release documents in order for this restoration to occur.
